Program Overview
In Kenya, despite laws and policies that uphold sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), many women and girls still lack access to accurate information, supportive services, and platforms to share their lived experiences. Studies show that significant gaps in SRHR awareness limit women’s ability to claim their rights, resulting in increased unintended pregnancies, unsafe practices, and barriers to accessing essential care. For example, knowledge about reproductive health rights remains low among women and girls, particularly on topics such as menstruation, contraceptives, safe abortion, and gender‑based violence—hindering their capacity to make informed decisions about their bodies and futures.
Sauti ya Mama exists to change this narrative by placing women’s voices at the center of advocacy, awareness, and social change. Through authentic storytelling, we highlight the real, unfiltered lived experiences of women—from everyday challenges in accessing SRHR information and services to victories of resilience and self‑advocacy.
Why Storytelling Matters
Personal stories are powerful tools for building understanding, empathy, and action. Where statistics may fail to capture the human element, stories illuminate why issues matter—bringing to life the barriers women face and the courage they show. They influence hearts, shift mindsets, and help dismantle stigma around SRHR challenges such as reproductive rights awareness, contraceptive use, unsafe abortions, gender‑based violence, and access to care.
What We Do
- Community Storytelling Events: We host gatherings both in person and online where women can share their stories with peers, community leaders, and the public, sparking dialogue and strengthening solidarity.
- Media Amplification: Through social media campaigns, short films, and audio clips, we bring women’s experiences to wider audiences to educate, inspire, and mobilize support for SRHR issues.
- Podcast Series: Our podcast creates a safe and trusted platform where women share their journeys, struggles, triumphs, and reflections. Each episode deepens understanding and fosters connection.p
Impact on Society
By amplifying women’s voices, Sauti ya Mama:
- Breaks down stigma surrounding SRHR topics that are often kept silent due to fear, shame, or cultural barriers.
- Builds empathy and understanding across communities, encouraging supportive environments for women to access care and exercise their rights.
- Informs policy and practice, ensuring that the real‑world experiences of women shape how services are designed and delivered.
